Have you had your hugs today? That’s the slogan used by Hugs Cafe that employs developmentally disabled adults to serve its customers. This non-profit restaurant in McKinney TX is open only four hours per day, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving salads, sandwiches and other lunch fare. The brainchild of founder and president Ruth Thompson, the mission of Hugs Cafe is to enhance the lives of adults with special needs by providing meaningful employment, teaching skills, developing respect and building foundations that change lives.
Having a meal at this cafe is a feel-good experience. The staff often greet patrons in a unique way, such as inviting them to dance their way to their tables. Upon seating, you’ll receive a menu with special instructions on how to order your food. Patrons must take their order to the cashier, pay for it and then wait for it at their table. Every entree is delivered with a hug from the team member who brings it, thus the restaurant’s name.
Not only is the service amazing at Hug’s Cafe, so is the food. Although the menu isn’t big, every item has been created and handcrafted with care by chefs who have years of experience in food preparation. Sandwiches are popular, particularly the chef’s special called Chickie Hug that features chicken salad with fresh spinach, cucumbers and tomato. All sandwiches come with your choice of bread. Choose from Cobb salad, garden scoop or chicken caesar salad. Soups are made fresh every day.
For many patrons, Hugs’ deserts are a must-have, particularly the cafe’s Italian Wedding Cake cookies. Other favorites are the bourbon chocolate pecan pie and the salted caramel brownie.
